Why do rows of similar Westlake houses matter for rats and mice?
Westlake was laid out as a planned block of near-identical single-family houses, with apartments and a big shopping centre built alongside. When houses are built close together in matching rows, their garages, side yards, fences and rooflines line up. A rat or mouse that finds a gap behind one garage can follow the fence line past several more.
That is why treating one house in a row has limits. A technician doing mouse control or rat control usually looks at the structure, the fence lines, where garbage is stored and what is growing against the walls. Neighbours who also seal gaps and secure garbage reduce the pressure on everyone in the row.
UC IPM says to seal openings over 1/4 inch with steel wool, wire screen or sheet metal. On a house this age, the places worth checking first include where pipes and cables pass through exterior walls, the garage door edges and any vent that has lost its screen. Rodent exclusion is the page for that sealing work.
Does San Mateo County deal with rats in Daly City?
The San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District serves the entire county, and its residential service includes free rat and mouse inspections with a report and advice, typically with a wait of about one business day. City-specific detail for Daly City was not available to us, so treat this as county-wide service rather than something we can confirm for your street.
The important limit is that the district does not treat private property. It inspects and advises, and the treatment on your own land is yours to arrange. That is where a technician fits: the inspection report can show what to fix, and the work on your house, garage and fence line is done by a company, not the district.

What about the apartments and shared buildings?
Doelger's Westlake included about 3,000 apartments as well as the houses, and apartment buildings change who owns the problem. Roaches and ants travel through shared walls, pipe chases and trash rooms, so treating one unit rarely settles it alone. Cockroach control and ant control in a multi-unit building are best coordinated with the manager so that adjoining units are checked together.
Whether tenants or owners are responsible for pest control is a question of lease terms and local rules that cannot be summarised here. A technician can describe what is present and where it seems to be coming from, which is the information a manager or landlord needs to act.
Are termites a Daly City concern?
Termites are a Bay Area-wide issue. UC IPM says western subterranean termites swarm in calm, sunny periods right after the first autumn rains, and that this is especially noticeable in the Bay Area. Daly City has dry summers and wet winters like the rest of the region, so the first soaking autumn rain is the time to look for wings near doors and windows.
Winged termites inside a home do not say how large a colony is, but they are a good reason to book a termite inspection. Postwar houses of this kind also have wood trim, fascia and eaves where drywood termites can settle, which is covered under drywood termite control.
What can neighbours in a row of similar houses do together?
Because Westlake streets repeat the same plan, a fix on one lot helps only if the next lot closes the same gaps. Neighbours can agree on a few simple habits: lids that close tightly on every bin, no pet food or bird seed left out overnight, and fence-line plants cut back from the walls and garage doors.
None of this replaces an inspection, and it cannot promise a result. It does lower the pressure, and it makes a technician's work last longer. If you rent in one of the apartment buildings, share the technician's findings with your manager, since lease terms and local rules on who pays cannot be summarised here.
